Literacy and Numeracy Week

This week is National Literacy and Numeracy Week. Each day there will be a family maths challenge to complete at home. Please have a go and let us know what you discover! We will be doing lots of activities at school and will post some of our work throughout the week. Here is your first maths activity:

Monday – What is something that takes you less then one minute to do? What takes you more than one minute? Get someone to time you and check!

Tuesday – How many windows are in your house?

Wednesday – Jamie the Juggler had 3 coloured balls that were orange, yellow and green.  He said that when he put them on  a table he could arrange the colours in 6 different ways.  Can you work out all 6 combinations?

Thursday – What is something that is shorter than your foot?  What is longer than your foot?  Can you find something that is the same length as your foot?

THE PREPS VISIT THE PLANETARIUM AND SCIENCEWORKS

The Preps visited the Planetarium to see “Tycho Goes to the Moon”.  Tycho journeyed to the moon in a kennel. He went passed a moon, and 2 planets.  What were they called?  He got very close to the sun.   We loved laying back in the chairs and looking at the night sky.  Flynn loved the pictures made by the stars.  Do you know your star sign?  How many stars make up the Southern Cross?  Do you know why the moon doesn’t fall out of the sky?  How were the craters formed? One of our highlights was Nitty Gritty City.  It was amazing.

Tash looks very small beside the big bed.                      We made a tornado.

Safety

The Preps have looked at safety at school, in the home, on the road, and in the water.  We had visits from the RACV, and Ambulance in Schools, and we visited the police station at Warrandyte.

Anatole shows us how to make a car and traffic sign.

Anatole visited school today.  He showed us how to glue wood, hammer in  a nail and how to sand out splinters from the wood.  We had so much fun.  Anatole also had a city made from wood too, and he taught us some traffic safety.  We all made  a Formula One car with  a spoiler and a different traffic sign.

Andrew shows Fylnn how to kick a football. Laces up!

This week the Preps at Anderson’s Creek Primary, were treated to a footy clinic, organised by the school’s very first Principal , Kevin Close.   Since his retirement, Kevin has been working as a forward scout for Carlton Football Club.   Andrew Reddie, who plays for Warrandyte’s Under 18’s, also showed the children how to kick a football.

The Preps enjoyed kicking, handpassing, marking and shooting for goals.  The highlight for them was  when Andrew almost kicked a goal almost the length of our oval.  The children always enjoy using our oval made of synthetic grass.

Prep M learns about the body

This is baby Clare and she is 3 weeks old.

This is baby Clare and she is 3 weeks old.

This Term we are learning about our body.  We are looking at our skeletons, and have looked at what is inside  a real bone.  We are making a question and answer book.   Flynn wanted to know where babies come from.  Melissa came with baby Clare.  She is 3 weeks old, and she is the same size as our baby buddies. she is Harry’s little sister.   Melissa gave Clare a bath in our room, and then she fed her with her breast milk.  We will learn about our heart, lungs and brain.  We are looking forward to having visits from the RACV, Seeing Eye Dogs Australia, the Ambulance, Harold and the Life Education Centre, and Anatole who will help us make a car and a traffic sign.  We will visit the Police station at Warrandyte.  We are very excited because we have Miss Libby.  She is from America, and is learning how to be a teacher.

Melissa is bathing Clare. She wipes her and puts moisturiser on her skin.
